Fly

words and music © 2000, Kate Polsky

I wanted you to tell me I could fly…
A little girl with bigger dreams, too big to fit inside your world
“Come down to Earth,” you’d say to me, “come down to Earth where you belong”
But Mom…don’t you think that I can fly

But other people told me I could fly…
A younger woman, tentative, standing on the edge and in one
step I might come crashing down to Earth, just like my mother said
Hey Mom…won’t you tell me I can fly

I’m starting to believe that I can fly…
And one day I’ll look down to Earth, see you lonely standing there
I’ll wave goodbye and think it sad you’ll never leave the ground
yeah Mom, you don’t know that you can fly
