Stuck in the Wrong Lane

words and music © 1994, Kate MacColl

STUCK IN THE WRONG LANE ONCE AGAIN, TURNING LEFT, MOVE OVER, PARKING
COMING TO A FULL STOP AND ALWAYS GOING SLOWER THAN I WANT TO GO
ALL THE TIME I’M IN THE WRONG LANE, MISS MY STREET CAN’T CROSS THREE LANES
MOVING EAST ON A ONE-WAY WEST-BOUND, STUCK IN THE WRONG LANE ONCE AGAIN

My life is a metaphor, like today I’m answering phones in a car dealership, not just
Any cars, mind you – we are talking Lotus, Porsche, BMW and all these
Suits are taking these cars for test drives, making down payments
Getting ready to drive the I-5 and I am answering the phones…that sums it up

CHORUS

Or like yesterday, I’m driving my car – the first time it’s been insured for a year and I
Like not waiting in the rain for a bus that won’t come in time to get me where
I wanna go when I wanna get there…you’ve been there too but
Yesterday, I’m driving…I got the radio turned up – loud – and I am
Singing along and playing the drums on my steering wheel and then…shit

CHORUS

So there’s this guy, and he’s doing his thing and that’s great, in fact, God bless him
But I’m behind him and he’s holding me up, ok? And there’s this
Other guy, doing his thing with the salesman and I am sure I would loooove to meet him
Ask him how he gets it going, makes it happen, but…
There’s the phone, and while I’m taking a message he leaves with the answer I know would change my life…I told you. My life’s a metaphor.

CHORUS
(and not that it matters, but why would a place that sells Porsches use Coffeemate?)
